Part of this was due to its proximity to where we staying. Just a few tram stops or a very nice (uphill) walk and we were at the gates. But there is a list of things we almost always go to first to get a flavor for the character of the places and people we are visiting. Zoos, botanical gardens, parks, and markets are all on that list. These almost always work better than museums, palaces, and churches at revealing the essential character of where we were at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-bod-modal-block bod-block-popup align-center\"><span style=\"background-color:rgba(38,86,130,0.61);color:#ffffff\" class=\"bod-block-popup-trigger type_btn bod-btn\">History and Information<\/span><div style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.1)\" class=\"bod-block-popup-overlay\"><\/div><div role=\"dialog\" aria-modal=\"false\" aria-labelledby=\"\" aria-describedby=\"\" class=\"bod-block-popup-wrap\"><div style=\"background-color:#ffffff;border-radius:10px \" class=\"bod-block-popup size-xl\"><div id=\"\" style=\"background-color:#ffffff\" class=\"bod-modal-title\"><h2 style=\"color:#000000\">History and Information<\/h2><\/div> <div id=\"\" style=\"padding:1px NaNrem \" class=\"bod-modal-content\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The <strong>Zoo Z\u00fcrich<\/strong> is a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zoo\">zoo<\/a> located in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Z%C3%BCrich\">Z\u00fcrich<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Switzerland\">Switzerland<\/a> and is considered as one of the best zoos in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Europe\">Europe<\/a>. Opened in 1929, it accumulated a collection of 2,200 specimens of 300 species by its seventy-fifth year. It is located on Z\u00fcrichbergstrasse, on the lower reaches of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Z%C3%BCrichberg\">Z\u00fcrichberg<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fluntern\">Fluntern<\/a> quarter.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The most famous attractions are the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asian_elephant\">Asian elephant<\/a> exhibit and Masoala Hall, which are inside of a large dome. Guests can even view elephants from underwater. They are also known as the only and first European institution to successfully breed <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gal%C3%A1pagos_tortoise\">Gal\u00e1pagos tortoises<\/a>. Over the course of the years, the Z\u00fcrich attraction has sent the baby tortoises to more than two dozen other zoos. In 2005 the zoo discovered that the seven <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lemur\">lemurs<\/a> caught in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andasibe-Mantadia_National_Park\">Andasibe<\/a> thought to be <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mouse_lemur\">mouse lemurs<\/a> were actually a new species later named Goodman mouse lemur.<\/p><cite><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Z%C3%BCrich_Zoologischer_Garten\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<\/div> <\/div> <div class=\"bod-block-popup-closer\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I suppose that in a city as old and as rich in cultural artifacts and traditions as Zurich, it&#8217;s unusual that one of the first places we headed for was the Zurich Zoo.
